Saint John Paul II's 1st Apostolic Visit to Alto Volta

Saturday 10th May 1980

Pope St John Paul II was a pilgrim to Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso) for the first time in 1980 during his first pilgrimage to Africa, his 5th apostolic journey, on which he also visited DR Congo (then Zaire), Congo-Brazaville, Kenya, Ghana and the Ivory Coast. JPII returned to Burkina Faso in 1990.

Pope St John Paul II spent the day in the capical, Ouagadougou, where his pilgrimage included:
